The Story Behind the Baluchi Overdyed Tribal Hand Knotted Rug

An overdyed rug is a second life for an old one: washed, shorn close and dyed again in one colour, so the first design survives underneath as shadow. Here the new colour is a soft lavender, and where the pile has worn low the rust and brown of the original medallion break through in patches, like an old fresco where the plaster has fallen away. The wool is coloured with natural dyes.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Senneh knot
The asymmetrical knot, also called the Persian knot. The yarn wraps one warp thread, which allows finer detail.
Density: 101–140 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Zero pile

Coloured with vegetable dyes.
Abrash
Hand-dyed in small batches, so the colour shifts gently across the rug. Rug makers call this abrash.
Light one way, dark the other
The colour looks deeper when you face the pile and lighter from the other end.
