The Story Behind the Gabbeh Hand Knotted Rug

Modern Gabbehs keep the plain fields of the nomad rugs of Iran's Zagros mountains and swap the old reds and golds for quieter colour. This Nepal-made one is all charcoal and grey, laid in soft vertical stripes of mixed strands, like a length of wool suiting. The pile leans one way, so the greys lighten and darken as you walk past.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Senneh knot
The asymmetrical knot, also called the Persian knot. The yarn wraps one warp thread, which allows finer detail.
Density: 81–100 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Low pile
