The Story Behind the Afghan Chobi Overdyed Hand Knotted Rug

The Gabbeh began with the nomads of Iran's Zagros mountains, who knotted plain fields with a few simple figures. This modern Gabbeh draws a handful of tall poppies across a brick-red ground, and overdyeing has pulled everything into one family of rust and brown, so the flowers read like a drawing in a single ink. It holds a sofa and two armchairs, or a dining table for six.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Ghiordes knot
The symmetrical knot, also called the Turkish knot. The yarn wraps two warp threads, which gives a firm pile.
Density: 81–100 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Low pile
