The Story Behind the Gabbeh Hand Knotted Rug

Gabbeh rugs started as the everyday rugs of the Qashqai and Luri nomads of Iran, with plain fields and a few small signs. This small Nepal-made piece keeps to that, with a terracotta centre inside a plum and rose border marked with simple woven figures, sized for a doorway or a bedside.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Senneh knot
The asymmetrical knot, also called the Persian knot. The yarn wraps one warp thread, which allows finer detail.
Density: 81–100 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Low pile
Material: Wool
