The Story Behind Essaouira

Essaouira starts as a Berber diamond lattice and then lets go. Lines cross, stop short and run off the edge, like cracks in dry earth or a sketch left open. The charcoal is coloured with natural dyes and hand knotted, streaked with lighter and darker wool, and the pile leans one way, so the rug darkens as you walk around it.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Ghiordes knot
The symmetrical knot, also called the Turkish knot. The yarn wraps two warp threads, which gives a firm pile.
Density: 50–80 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.

Abrash
