The Story Behind Meknes

Meknes draws every diamond twice, like a doorway framed and framed again, and fills a few with solid sand. Bands of zigzags close the field at both ends. The wool is coloured with natural dyes and knotted by hand, and the charcoal shifts in tone from row to row, so the lattice seems to sit on weathered stone.

How it was made

Construction
Hand Knotted

Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.

Ghiordes knot

The symmetrical knot, also called the Turkish knot. The yarn wraps two warp threads, which gives a firm pile.

    Hand-dyed in small batches, so the colour shifts gently across the rug. Rug makers call this abrash.
